Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide is also commonly referred to as laughing gas because its effects make patients feel calm and happy. With laughing gas, your sense of awareness is dulled, so you’ll feel more at ease. You will also be less likely to feel pain or discomfort during your procedure.
While your awareness is somewhat numbed, you will remain fully conscious and able to respond to your dentist and answer questions. After your procedure, nitrous oxide’s effects wear off quickly, and most people can drive themselves home from their appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
We administer oral conscious sedation through a pill, a combination of pills, or a liquid in the case of children. Your dentist will prescribe the calming medication and instruct you to take it a few hours before your appointment.
This type of sedation will dull your awareness heavily and numb your senses. When taking oral conscious sedation, it is important to arrange a ride to and from the dentist as it is unsafe to drive yourself while under its effects.
Intramuscular (IM) Sedation
With intramuscular sedation, our experienced team provides sedation by injecting anesthesia into your muscle. We typically administer IM sedation through the upper arm or thigh muscles and it is only done with our pediatric patients.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
At Echeverri Dental Center in Spring Branch, we have a close relationship with an experienced anesthesiologist who can provide IV or intravenous sedation delivered directly into the bloodstream. The benefit of IV sedation is that the effects take hold quickly, and the anesthesiologist can easily increase or decrease your sedative intake during your procedure.
Hospital Sedation for Children
Complete sedation is performed at Texas Children's Hospital and is only available to pediatric patients.
