Your child’s dental health is crucial to their long-term wellness and comfort—yes, cavities can be painful. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep your child’s smile healthy and reduce their risk of tooth decay.

Healthy steps include:

Below, our pediatric dentists in 77055 break down these helpful steps.

5 Steps for Cavity Prevention in Kids

Step #1: The Oral Hygiene Routine Is Essential

Brushing at least twice daily (and flossing for older children) is essential to oral health at every age. If your child is brushing on their own, you may want to supervise their sessions to ensure they’re spending enough time and covering every tooth surface. Ideally, they should spend at least two minutes.

Step #2: Start Dental Care Early

You should bring your child to the dentist as soon as you notice the first tooth coming through the gum. Early visits help us establish a relationship with your child, instil healthy habits, and monitor their oral hygiene from the beginning.

Step #3: Bring Your Child to the Dentist

Your child should visit the dentist every six months for checkups and eventually teeth cleanings. This is the same schedule we recommend for adults.

Step #4: Nutrition Is Essential

Children love to snack, but not all treats are equally healthy. Whenever possible, avoid sugary and acidic snacks and drinks, such as fruit juice, soda, candy, and snack cakes. Consider low-fat yogurt, nuts, and fruit as alternatives.

Step #5: Talk to Your Child’s Dentist in Spring Branch

If your child has difficulty brushing and flossing, we can help them learn these essential skills. Additionally, the dentist may consider applying dental sealants to prevent cavity-causing debris from reaching the tooth enamel.
