As summer winds down, you’re probably busy preparing to send the kids back to school. You’ll need to buy school supplies and new shoes, and before you know it, your calendar will be filled with practices and activities.

During the summer, you don’t have a regular schedule, so it’s easy for dental routines to lapse. If that sounds familiar, now is the perfect time to reestablish your family’s dental routines. Here’s how.

Dental Routines during the School Year

As the school year starts, your kids will be readjusting to set schedules, so it’s a great time to foster healthy habits to ensure their oral and overall health. Here are some tips to help them:

  • Brushing their teeth — Since they will be going to bed and getting up at the same time, establish a brushing routine with your kids. When they wake up in the morning and before bed, have them brush their teeth for two minutes to prevent cavities and gum disease. Consider rewarding younger children with stickers or playing their favorite song while they brush. Make it a family affair by brushing together, and be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Flossing and using mouthwash — Besides brushing, encourage your kids to floss daily and rinse their mouths with mouthwash for extra protection.
  • Snacking at school — What your child eats is essential to keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Start a routine of packing healthy snacks for them to take to school. Give them choices so they feel like they’re part of the decision-making process. Fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and cheese are all good options.
  • Visiting your Spring Branch dentist — Part of your back-to-school dental routine should include a dental exam and checkup. This allows us to diagnose dental issues before they become more significant problems. Visiting our dental office before school starts is a great way to establish healthy habits.
  • Drinking plenty of water — Encourage your kids to drink water instead of juice, soda, or sports drinks. Let them choose a fun water bottle, and talk to them about the importance of staying hydrated at school.
  • Protecting their teeth — If your child plays sports, ask your dentist about a custom mouthguard to protect their teeth and mouth from injury.
